AN: This fic was written for the Angst vs Schmoop Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] numb3rswriteoff. This is my first time writing/posting fanfic, and I think I did a pretty good job, despite the fact that I bitched about it from the minute I got the assignment. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] delgaserasca for getting me to sign up for this and help get me through it. Also, it was really, really hard writing Don/Liz, so if it sounds crappy to you, please the blame the Numb3rs people for the lack of Liz backstory. Thanks.

He hadn’t seen her in years. His memories of her are not positive ones; she was the overeager trainee with adrenaline issues.

(All he remembers is making a lot of threats.)

When they met at the racetrack, he was shocked to see her. She had changed so much in those few years. She was no longer the wild girl; she was calmer, more reserved.

(She wasn’t the girl he knew. She’s different than he remembers, at least in her personality. She looked exactly the same.)

He never thought that an FBI team would want her with all her craziness and wild tendencies. And yet, she was now a fully qualified agent.

(She was working in Organized Crime now. That seems like the perfect place for her, he thinks.)

-

It was a mistake, sleeping with her. He knew that. Everyone knows that you can’t sleep with a co-worker. The team would find out. They’d spread rumors.

(Technically, she wasn’t his co-worker; he was her instructor at Quantico. And they didn’t sleep together, they just made out.)

They solved the case, they didn’t need her anymore. So she left. He tried to forget her. And he did, for awhile. Then she came back a few months later.

He was surprised to see her again. He thought that once she left, she’d be gone for good; he’d never have to see or hear from her again.

She showed up at the office, her box of stuff in her hands, asking him where her desk was.

(She had already been briefed on the latest case. It seemed that she had become more efficient since he saw her last. Or that she still had some of the over-eagerness from her days at Quantico.)

He came to the realization that she wasn’t just working for the FBI in Los Angeles; she was the newest member of his team.

(He couldn’t help but think she requested it.)

-

He was committed to making it work this time. He’d been in so many relationships that didn’t last long and ended badly. But this one was different.

(I’m crazy about you, he says. She doesn’t believe him. She knows about his past.)

He knew it would be hard, dating a fellow agent. He had done it before. She knew it too, and still said no. She didn’t want to be with him if it couldn’t work.

(He got her to changer her mind.)

They only went on a few dates, nothing major. The rest of the team knew about it; they just didn’t ask questions.

The team would find out about them sooner or later. She told him all the rumors she’d heard about them. She was unsure that she’d made the right choice being with him.

He didn’t want her to get hurt or lose her again. He had to tell the team. He knew it was a big step, but not telling them would’ve risked their relationship.

(He made the rest of the team jealous, telling them about him and her.)
